Atari Bought Former Longtime Rival
Atari has recently acquired the Intellivision brand name, gaining control over more than 200 games from Intellivision LLC for an undisclosed amount. This acquisition marks a significant moment in gaming history, as Atari and Intellivision were fierce rivals during the 70s and 80s, being among the first console manufacturers in the United States.
Atari is renowned for successful consoles such as the Atari 2600, released in 1979, which featured iconic hits like Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Donkey Kong, Pitfall, and Frogger. One of its main competitors was the Intellivision console, which also launched in 1979. Both brands struggled to maintain their dominance in the console market from the late 80s onwards, but Atari has experienced a renaissance recently, driven by nostalgia for its classic intellectual properties (IPs).
